K.R.Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science & Arts is an exclusive campus designed by the eminent architect Padmashree G. Shanker located at a picturesque village of Kottayam District of Kerala namely ‘Thekkumthala’. The serene beauty and ambience of the place itself motivates one’s inherent creativity. Thekkumthala belongs to ‘Chengalam East’ Village of Kottayam Taluk.
The institute, named after K. R. Narayanan who was the President of India during 1992 – 1997, was inaugurated by Hamid Ansari, Vice President of India, on 11 January 2016; an autonomous institute established by the Government of Kerala. The Institute is managed by a Governing Council which has Chief Minister of Kerala as Chairman and Minister for Education, Kerala State, as Co-Chairman and twelve members. There is also an Academic Council consisting of people for the film and television industry.
Providing quality training and fine tuning talented and qualified is the main purpose behind the institution. As India is a country with rich, deep-rooted traditions in art and culture, the exposure to global concepts and a deeper knowledge of the technological advances worldwide, better training methods on a par with international standards has to be developed. It is in this regard that the Government of Kerala conceived the idea of establishing a National Institute of Visual Science & Arts in the name of the late Shri. K.R. Narayanan, the former President of India.
To be a global Institute of Visual Aesthetics- a multidisciplinary centre of excellence in the fields of Visual Science and Arts- synthesizing diverse streams of knowledge in the areas of information, entertainment, education and technology that enhance and enrich human experience and appreciation of beauty and arts.
To endeavour to be the best academic and research institution, focused on innovation and creativity, unflinchingly committed to building a new generation of artists, scientists and engineers under the broad canopy of visual science and arts.
Design and deliver academic courses relevant to video, television, the digital arts as well as both evolving and emerging forms of performance, design, and contemporary art. This institute proudly contribute in building the highest standards of professionalism and ethics in these spheres.
