Solo performances has a lot of potential in the Indian theatre as it is one of the least explored fields.
Maya Krishna Rao is coming up with yet another powerful solo performance through her play
Quality Street. Quality Street is an adaptation of the short story of famous writer Chimamanda
Adiche. This play was first performed back in 2011 and was critically acclaimed. Now she is back
with the show at Serendipity’17.
The thread of the story is the conflict between a mother and daughter and the backdrop is Nigeria.
The mother wants the US educated daughter to get married. But are things that easy to convince
her? She with ease lays both the characters. Rao as she is trained in Kathakali is rich in her facial
expressions. She came to the stage dressed in green, looking like a traditional Nigerian. The humour
sense and the timing of this actress is exceptional.
