Could you guess a place from certain sounds given to you? Are certain sounds identical to the city?
Well, find out from Sonic City. A sonic wall that would replicate the sounds of Delhi. This sound
installation was conceptualised by Shubha Mudgal. It includes music, however Sound isn’t just about
music. It also has the ambient sound of Delhi, the noises, the project encapsulate the soundscape of
the entire city.
It is cacophonic at times, but like every city Delhi’s beautiful sounds are also replicated here. The
project is collaborated by Himanshu Bablani and Sumant Jayakrishnan as well. Shubha Mudgal
responded in a recent interview “I myself am fascinated by technology. The tanpura is a huge
instrument, very delicate and fragile. Its sound has been sampled so well that, in a sense that, it has
become far more convenient to teach and learn”.
Sonic City is also talking about the same. How technology and music could be blended in such a
manner that a city in itself is being replicated. She also pointed out in the interview given to IANS
that “ It is a programme which compiles the chaos of the national capital- the sound of traffic, the
voices from dharnas, the speeches at political rallies, the beats of drums at weddings and the
chirping of birds, along with melodious voices to create a rhythmic whole”
